Abstract:Spectroscopic investigations are essential to understand intriguingphenomena in many areas of physics. Inparticular, recent advanced spectroscopic tools such as resonant inelasticx-ray scattering and photoemission spectroscopy play an important role in condensedmatter physics. While research on epitaxialthin-films is expected to reveal hidden novel physical properties, previous inelasticspectroscopic investigations have been unable to detect these properties due tothe small cross-section.
In this seminar, I will discuss advanced inelastic light scattering (Raman spectroscopic)studies of two-magnon dynamics in Sr2IrO4thin-films asfunctions of epitaxial stress and temperature.Recent experimental studies of Sr2IrO4thin-filmshave contradicted the widely-accepted Glazer description of octahedral tiltingand rotation in perovskite oxides. However, our experimental observations and density functional theory calculations show thatthe multi-orbital nature of theJeff= ½ state is crucial to understanding the magnetic and electronic properties of5dtransition-metal oxides. This study demonstrates how advanced spectroscopictools combined with epitaxially stressed samples can improve ourfundamentalunderstanding of stronglycorrelated, spin-orbit coupled electrons, enabling us to explore the novelphase diagrams of these systems.
